The Magnificent Planets Band 50th Reunion
The Magnificent Planets Band 50th Reunion
Funk is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities in the mid-1960’s when African-American musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of soul music, jazz, and rhythm and blues (R&B). Funk de-emphasizes melody and chord progressions used in other related genres and brings a strong rhythmic groove of a bass line and a drummer to the foreground. It was showcased by artists such as James Brown, Parliament-Funkadelic, Chaka Kahn, Mothers Finest and Sly and the Family Stone, just to mention a few of the early forerunners.

In Macon, Georgia, three young men, Harold Thomas, Jerome Thomas and Gerald Lundy would soon add their own brand of funk to this illustrious family of Funk musicians and it would result in the formation of the dynamic Planets Band. It started out with these three young men forming their own band in the 7th grade called the Dynamic Playboys. They honed their talents on the drums and the saxophone and in 1969 changed their name to the Apollo’s. At that time Gerald Lundy left the group and they were joined by Walt Jackson as Lead singer and Bass Guitarist, Jerome Thomas continued as Drummer, Harold Thomas was honing his talent on the Saxophone. This was a time when the United States was engaged in a race with Russia to put a man in space and it ended up with Neil Armstrong having the distinction of being the first man to walk on the Moon. So, in 1970 The Apollo’s became The Planets Band. The core group at that time were: Roy Lee Davis on Trumpet, Edward Grant on Keyboards, Craig Gates on Lead Guitar, Harold Thomas on Saxophone, Jerome Thomas on Drums, Walter Jackson on Bass Guitar and Lead Vocals, and a brand new female voice…Ouida Walls.

The Stars will align (AGAIN) and the latitude and longitude will be in synch when The Planets Band celebrates their 50th Reunion on September 22, 2018 at the Hargray Capitol Theatre in Macon. “Everybody will be getting high” on the Funk.
